The Last First

After have a small epiphany this morning, I edited the title of this post.  Yesterday was "the last first"--I have now gone a whole year without my mom, completing the cycle.  There will be no more "firsts."  Thank goodness!  The post below is unchanged.

Today marks the sad occasion of the one-year anniversary of my mom's death.  I simply cannot believe that it's already been a year since the events of January 2012.  Those events are so indelibly and vividly imprinted in my mind that it seems as though they just happened a couple of months ago.

The morning of her death, the doctors had ordered some type of abdominal scan since she seemed to be bleeding internally.  The nurse called me at five am to say that they were going to take her down to do the test.  I planned to get up and go over to the hospital, but I guess I fell back asleep.  The next thing I knew, the phone was ringing again.  It was just after six, and, with sleep still clouding my head, I heard the nurse say, "I'm very sorry to tell you that the patient expired."

My very first thought was that someone needed to give the nurse a lesson on how to tell someone that their loved one had passed away.  Who says "expired" anyway?  For a brief moment, I thought that I might not have understood her correctly, but then she was saying something about what I needed to do next and asking if knew what funeral home I wanted to use--so I knew that I had indeed heard her correctly.

My first thought after hanging up the phone was to thank God for giving my mom well-deserved peace.  I knew that she would not have wanted to live the way she was after her stroke.  She had already been miserably ill before the stroke, and I think she may have been ready to go.  The night before she died, I talked to her, not knowing if she was able to hear or understand me.  I told her that if she needed to go I would be fine--not to stay just for me.  Maybe she did hear and understand.  I like to think so.

The next week was a blur of arrangements and funerals, traveling to and from Oklahoma.  And then it was all over.  I was left by myself.  All the while I congratulated myself on how well I was handling the whole situation.  Of course, if you know me--or if you've read this blog--you know that grief hit me hard.

I've spent the last year grieving and trying to assimilate two households into one.  For some strange reason, this anniversary, while sad, seems to be a turning point.  I feel as though now that I have gone through my year of "firsts" (first Mother's Day without her, first birthday without her, first Christmas without her), I can move on.

I hope that she is proud of me--even though I haven't dealt with everything perfectly.  I can finally look forward to what's ahead!

365 photography project

Any photography aficionados out there?

Some of my Internet acquaintances and I are doing a 365 photography project.  This is a project where participants take a photo each day for an entire year.  One of my friend's projects features a photograph of a red object each day; other people do random pictures.  My project, however, features photos of one object over an entire year!

Other than my dogs, some of my favorite things to photograph are toys.  Don't ask me why--I don't know.  For one thing, they're easier to photograph than my dogs because they hold still!  I ended up choosing one of my teddy bears to photograph.

Follow my progress through my Flickr photostream.  And, if you see me taking photos of a teddy bear--well, now you know why!

New Year's resolutions progress

How are you coming with your New Year's resolutions?

I'm proud to say that I'm doing pretty well with mine.  Here is my original list:

1. Read at least one book each week.
2. Watch at least one movie each week.
3. Complete my Project Life for 2013.
4. Visit my friend Martha in Seattle.
5. Keep my house reasonably clean (this is a big one).
6. Get my paperwork organized, especially the financial stuff.
7. Finish organizing and decorating my house.
8. Sell my other house.
9. Eat at home more.
10. Find a new hobby, project, or something to keep me occupied.
11. Finish a 365 photography project.
12. Finish reading the Bible.
13. Save money.

You'll notice that I added a couple of extra resolutions!

So far, during the first week of the year, I have finished a book and watched a movie (Thor, which I'd never seen).  I have reduced my eating out habit to 3-4 times per week (down from eating out every meal).  This is also helping me save money; some changes at work are forcing me to be more frugal (which I probably needed to do anyway).

I have the materials for my Project Life album, and have been collecting items to use.  My 365 photography project is also going well.  Check it out at my Flickr photostream.  If you know me, and you happen to see me carrying a teddy bear, you'll know I'm not crazy.  Well, maybe I am!

I still need to work on keeping the house clean and getting my finances organized. Those are lagging behind because they are things I really don't like to do.  And, since I will have more free time on my hands, I have definitely been thinking about that new hobby or project.  Maybe something that could earn some extra income!?

So, how are you doing with your resolutions?

Christmases past and present

Bear with me...I have one last word about Christmas and then I'll move on!

I have a confession to make:  Ever since I was a little girl, my parents were very generous with Christmas gifts, both to me and to each other.  First as a child, and then as a young adult, I realized that Christmas rocked at our house!  My parents did not spoil me behaviorally, but they did indulge when it came to Christmas gifts.  And, really, I was just fine with that!  My father was the one responsible for buying the excess of gifts, actually.  My mom was too frugal, but my dad, who had never had anything growing up, wasn't about to scrimp when it came to Christmas gifts.

Although my dad's nurses swore that he walked around the office saying, "Bah Humbug," it must have been an act.  He loved Christmas!  Christmas candy, poinsettias, lights, and especially buying gifts--Daddy loved it all.  And my mom loved making things for me for Christmas.  A Christmas never passed that didn't include at least one handmade gift.  When I was very young, that mostly meant Barbie clothes.  My Barbies had the best wardrobes in town, and mom swore I had a radar for knowing when she was making something.  I'd come home from school and snoop in her sewing room trash can.  When I spotted little scraps of fabric, I'd ask oh so innocently, "Are you making something new, Mama?"  She learned to hide those fabric scraps!

As I grew older, the need for Barbie clothes dwindled, and instead my parents gave me real clothes--something that a young fashionista craved.  Ah, for the days when I was skinny enough for that to matter!  As a teen, I loved clothes just about as much as anything else I received.

Time passed, and after my dad passed away in 1989, Christmas was always somewhat bittersweet.  Mom tried to keep things the same at first, but then after I got divorced, Christmas just wasn't that joyous of an occasion, what with no husbands, no kids, no grandparents, and no close family at the time.  For the first time ever, I understood why some people don't like the holidays.  Some years, I just wished the holidays would be over so that I could go about my business without feeling the need to be "happy."  Mom and I stopped trying when it came to gifts too.  Most of the time, she just asked me what I wanted, and the last few years, I even bought the gift myself since she couldn't get out.  I still liked surprising her, though.  Mom still had a few surprises up her sleeve too--like the year we ended up getting each other the same gift that we had both seen and liked in a catalog.  It was a small gift, but that is one of the funniest, best things I remember from the last couple of Christmases.

Several years ago, my cousin Kris issued a standing invitation to mom and I to spend Christmas with her family.  Lord bless her, that was a fabulous thing to me--being able to spend the holiday with family!  Many years, though, mom's health was such that we couldn't go.  It was almost like "the old days" though, when we were able to make the trip.  One year, she even invited some of my other family to stop by the house on Christmas eve.  That was so fun!

I knew this Christmas would be hard--the first on my own (so to speak).  Of course, Kris (and her kids) insisted that I come up for as long as I was able.  I must admit that I also indulged myself more than a little and bought myself a few gifts:  new glasses (I needed a new prescription anyway), a Project Life kit, a new camera, a photo printer, and the LV bag I have been coveting for years!  Like I said, I indulged more than a little!  I'll be good next year, and I figured after the year I'd had, I deserved it!

Pretty, huh?

My cousin's son, Lane--who happens to be (along with his sister Hillary) one of the coolest kids I've ever met!

From this year forward, I resolve to making Christmas a joyous occasion, no matter where or with whom I celebrate it!  I think mom--and daddy--would want that.

New Year's Resolutions--2013 edition

So...it's that time again.  Time for everyone to make some resolutions about how they'd like to live life in 2013.

I didn't have a chance to make any resolutions for 2012, so I guess I'll give it a go for 2013.  Here's my list (subject to change, of course!):

So, what are your resolutions for 2013?

Show and tell Sunday, #3

Today's show and tell is my father's very vintage doctor's bag!

There's not really much of a story associated with this one; I just like it.  It is so reminiscent of days gone by.  When daddy started practicing medicine, he did go on house calls.  I was so young, I don't remember much about that--or whether or not he actually carried this bag.  I do remember that my mom insisted he stop making house calls because she had to go with him (for propriety's sake).  Since I was a baby, this was immensely inconvenient.  Another factor in stopping those house calls was the fact that he rarely got paid for making them!

Why?

My prayers and thoughts go out to those in Newtown, Connecticut that lost loved ones on Friday.

As many of us are doing, I just keep asking, "Why?"  I don't understand.

Although there are no answers to that question, I find myself wanting to do something, anything for those who have undergone such a horrible loss.  If you have a few spare dollars this Christmas, you might consider donating them to:

United Way of Western Connecticut

Newtown Youth and Family Services

Newtown Memorial Fund

There are lots of other places and people who could use a hand too.

RIP Rusty the Rooster of The Thundering Herd

Prayers and thoughts for our friends over at The Thundering Herd in the loss of their pack mate, Rusty.

This is a picture of Rusty from their blog (please forgive me for borrowing it, but I want to share this special dog and this wonderful blog with my readers).  Rusty's passing makes my heart ache for the Herd's humans, as I am very familiar with that hole in your heart that the passing of a beloved pet leaves.

How wonderful the Internet is, though!  I have made so many friends of the canine and human varieties through the Internet.  I have never met them in person, but through words and pictures, I follow their adventures, and yes, share in their heartache.

So, if you have some time, head on over to read about Rusty and the rest of the Herd.  If you love dogs, you'll love reading about this bunch of Sibes and their owners.  In the meantime, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers, and give your fur-kids an extra hug and snuggle tonight.

Some Christmas cheer

I've spent the weekend attending a Southern Association of Colleges and Schools conference at the Anatole Hotel.  These are some of their lovely Christmas decorations.

On a bright note, I did manage to decorate a small tree for my office at work.  It's pink--just like my office.  Yes, I know that those of you that know me personally find a pink office hard to believe.  I'll post pictures of my tree when I take some.

The blahs!

Sorry that I have been more absent than present in my little blog.  Christmas season has already been very difficult for me.

When mom first passed away--for the first two-three weeks--I was amazed at how well I was handling things.  I was calm and decisive; I didn't break down into fits of tears or anything.  I remember driving to work one day and congratulating myself on how well I was handling everything.  As you've probably guessed, that didn't last.  About a month after her death, the whole thing hit me like a ton of bricks.  I bawled at the drop of the proverbial hat!

Well, I did the same thing when it came to Christmas.  I planned ahead for the Christmas season, buying a new tree and some ornaments.  I scheduled a trip to Oklahoma to see my cousin and her family.  I went shopping for everybody I could think of.  Yep, I was doing great--looking forward to it and everything.  Until...one day in Target.  I was browsing the Christmas aisle, looking for something, and I heard the first Christmas carol since last year.  Immediately, I was transported to last year when mom was so ill, and I remembered how she didn't even get to enjoy her very last Christmas because she was so sick.

Before I knew what was happening, I was blubbering right there in the aisle of Target.  I quickly shuffled off to a less-crowded aisle and mopped up my tears.  Since then, I have to tell myself, "You will not cry today."  I am more or less successful.  Honestly, sometimes, less than more.  Still, tears do not tell the whole picture.  I find myself saddened into inaction, sitting and doing nothing when I get home from work.  Nothing holds my interest--not television or the Internet, or my old favorite-- books.  I haven't finished a book in weeks.  I just want to sleep.

I know I'm depressed.  I have no trouble recognizing the symptoms.  Unfortunately, I just don't think there's any way around it, at least until Christmas is over.  I miss both my mom and dad so much right now.  There just aren't even any words to express how alone I feel.

So, please understand if I'm absent for a little while.  This blog is cathartic, but I'm sure that reading about sadness is no more fun than actually being sad.

Juneau visits Santa

Juneau got to visit Santa Claws this morning!  Normally photogenic, he wasn't "feeling" it this morning.  There was hay and there were other dogs and mama wasn't holding him...

I didn't even try to take Sitka or Poquito.  Sitka doesn't like to have her picture made, and Poquito would have bitten Santa, thus earning himself a place on the "naughty" list for sure.

Maybe next year I'll try to have someone take a photo of all four of us!

Happy turkey day from me, Sitka, Juneau, and Poquito!  Thanks for reading my little blog!

What I'm thankful for

What a year it's been!

Despite this year's trials, I have a lot to be thankful for:

My best friend Martha.  I couldn't ask for a better bestie!  She came all the way from Seattle and spent a week with me when mom died.  And then came back in October and spent two weeks with me, during which she whipped through the majority of what was left to be done in my house.  What kind of great person comes on a vacation and then actually WORKS?  The BEST kind!

My cousin Kris and her family.  It's nice to know that I have family that loves me and even wants to spend holidays with me!  Kris dropped everything and came when mom had her stroke.  She said that she knew if I asked her to come, it must be critical, so she did.

My friend Nicolas, who always helps me think things through.  I don't get to spend as much time as I'd like with him, but I know if I ask, he'll be there.  It's nice to have people like that in your life!

All my other friends:  John, Joann & Bill, Rebecca & Jonathan, Gail & Steven--you all rock!  You've been so loving and helpful throughout this year of turmoil.

My dog-children:  Sitka, Juneau, and Poquito.  You're the reason I go home at night.  You're my companions and you brighten my days, even when you are naughty and chew furniture.  I do love you more than my "things!"

My home.  I am so lucky to have inherited mom's home.  It's well-built, and large enough to house all four of us, and all of my stuff.  I couldn't ask for a better place--and besides, it's filled with such happy memories.

My job.  I love knowing that what I do impacts young (and sometimes not-so-young) people and their dreams for a better life.  Sometimes I get frustrated with the politics, and the whining, but, ultimately, I love it.

My car.  Never underestimate the value of having reliable transportation.  It's not the fanciest ride, but I don't look like a slob driving it either!

My stuff.  I know it sounds materialistic, but--if you've been paying attention to my blog--you know I love my stuff.  It all holds happy memories for me!

My church.  I appreciate all of the support I receive from my church and especially the church members.  After a lifetime of avoiding organized religion, I have a new appreciation of what it means to be a member of a church family.

My health.  Despite having several ailments, I am thankful that I feel good and have the ability to "get up and go."   Being diagnosed with leukemia has made me acutely aware of how thankful am I for the ability to do this.

My country.  I am thankful that I live in a country that allows me the ability to live my life as I choose, up to my ability to support that lifestyle.  It's a true blessing to have this freedom when so many don't.

My mind.  I am grateful that I have the ability to think for myself, and the ability to think clearly.  One of our family friends died from Alzheimer's this year, and it really reminded me that having the ability to think and be rational is a gift.

So, what are you thankful for?
